Overview
Australian Wind Services partnered with ACCIONA Energy in February 2014 to pilot a new service model, our Operations and Maintenance (O&M) model. This was aimed at increasing productivity at the State’s second largest wind farm.
Not being constrained by the status quo, we worked with ACCIONA Energy to develop an integrated and flexible model, where our team of technicians spent a concentrated period onsite working collaboratively with the existing team, conducting services and identifying issues that the onsite team can fix.
Approach
During a 12 – 14 week period, our team ‘campaigned’ the maintenance activities enabling the whole fleet to be done in a shorter time frame, allowing the turbines to produce energy the remaining time.
Services provided
- Scheduled servicing at 6 and 12-month intervals
- Preventative maintenance service contract
- Installation of HSS components
- Turbine Tensioning
- Component change outs
- Retro fit upgrades
- HV operating
Results
The combination of being able to tap into our specialist service areas and highly reliable servicing schedule, while retaining the knowledge base internally was invaluable.
Within the first year, the wind farm experienced:
- increased productivity
- cost efficiencies
- a significant reduction in breakdowns across the fleet.
Australian Wind Services has now secured a further four year extension to its initial two year contract.
Client feedback
“AWS are unique in their ability to think innovatively, as demonstrated by the unique servicing model that we’ve adopted at Waubra. It’s a true partnership whereby the AWS team of technicians integrate seamlessly within both the community and the onsite team itself, who are comforted in the knowledge that they can be trusted with the job at hand. Their customer focused, service oriented approach, cultural fit, accountability and transparency are all highly valued and a reason why it’s been a successful partnership to date.”

2016 – ongoing
Overview
In 2016, ACCIONA Australia called on its long-standing partnership with Australian Wind Services (AWS) to service its 31, 46.5 MW capacity wind turbines.
Approach
Having successfully provided preventative maintenance services for the Waubra Wind Farm, it was deemed a “natural progression” to secure our services for the Gunning Wind Farm.
Our initial two year contract has been extended for a further two years, with the partnership continuing to deliver efficiencies in terms of the knowledge base and experience in the platform.
We took the Waubra contract arrangement a step further and devised a truly flexible and unique service model, with a one stop shop providing a core group of highly specialized AWS technicians available when and where they needed them.
Like ACCIONA, we invest in the local community, recruiting local specialists, supporting local businesses and raising money for schools, sporting clubs and charities.
Services provided
- Operations and maintenance
Results
The Gunning turbines are consistently performing well on availability and above the industry average.
Client feedback
“AWS is the only provider in Australia to have an individual O&M contract with ACCIONA. This is due to the way they go about their business, the quality of workmanship, proactiveness and true sense of partnership displayed at every level. Like us, they are committed to ensuring our assets are in a position to deliver for the long term.
Their safety record and collaboration is outstanding, and their commitment to the local community in which they operate and openness and transparency highly valued.
Through Linda’s leadership, they are flexible and will adapt to the individual needs of the wind farm to deliver the very best outcome possible. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Linda and the team at AWS.”
